The Secret Agent

Brazil 1977, a time of great mischief.

Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his son, he travels to Recife during Carnival, but soon realizes that the city is not the safe haven he was expecting.

Winner of Best Director (Kleber Mendonça Filho) and Best Actor in Cannes, THE SECRET AGENT is currently nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Actor Drama, Best Foreign Language Film, and is Brazil’s pick for Oscar submission.

“‘The Secret Agent’ suggests something more consequential with its gripping portrait of political resistance: that survival is a matter of both watching and watching over one another.” (Washington Post)

“The period detail is a marvel, the era’s music a most excellent groove, and the cast a top-to-bottom wowzer of interesting faces and eclectic bodies.” (Austin Chronicle)

“This smart, brutal, often funny thriller uses the travails of one ordinary man to capture a reactionary era in its daily realities and surreal absurdities, its public cruelty and private decency.” (NPR)

“Fiery and relentlessly paced (its 158 minutes don’t contain a minute of bloat), the political thriller pivoting around themes of paranoia and resistance feels perfectly tuned to the moment.” (Globe and Mail)
