Harold and Maude

They were meant to be. But exactly what they were meant to be is not quite clear.

Director Hal Ashby‘s sublime romantic black comedy stars a young Bud Cort as Harold, the son of a wealthy wealthy, neglectful woman. Disillusioned with life and obsessed with death to a morbid degree, he tries to gain attention for himself with various hilariously staged “suicides.” At a funeral, he meets a much, much older woman (the wonderful Ruth Gordon) named Maude who is his complete opposite: a fun-loving 80-year-old eccentric. A fast friendship ensues and they soon become inseparable while helping each other move through their various personal issues. As their relationship blossoms, it develops into something resembling a taboo romance, in which they explore the tired theme of the meaning of life – with a fresh perspective.

Featuring the music of Cat Stevens, HAROLD AND MAUDE is an all-time audience favourite, and lands at #6 on Rolling Stone Magazine‘s reader poll of the 25 Best Cult-Classics of All Time.
